Movement in Geography
Migration
Gentrification: Gentrification is when a government tries to improve the infrastructure of an area. They will spend money and try to make the area more “presentable”. This is important because it can help get crime rates down however it can also make it harder for lower income people to find places to live and eat. This belongs on the Migration tab because it can force lower income people out of their neighborhood. When something get gentricated prices of things like real estate or food and just the daily cost of living go up. This forces people of lower income to move away. Vancouver is an example of this.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is what keeps cities and towns running.
Things like stores and public transport and education. Everything can change if we have a good infrastructure or a bad one.
This is important because when the infrastructure is not good things like education can't be provided for many which might be a reason that people try to leave their country. If we look at some countries in Latin America the infrastructure has failed leaving fully grown adults with sometimes only a grade school application. Honduras for example when we were looking at the migrant stories, they have one of the highest murder rates along with a very low graduation rate at high schools. Healthcare is also something that is not accessible to everyone. This is partly due to the lack of infrastructure and the government's failure.
-
UNHCR: This is an organization responsible for protecting refugees. This is important because refugees need to be protected.
This has been something super important and without the UNHCR lots of refugees and migrants would be in trouble and would fear way more for their lives. They are now being protected which is something very necessary.
Asylum: Somewhere safe for people who have fled their country. You can file for asylum and if you are granted it then you can be kept safe which is important because we need to keep people safe.
-
Syria: Syria has a huge significance in this branch because so many refugees and migrants have come from syria. There are over 5 million syrian refugees. Along with 12 million who need humanitarian assistance according to worldvission.org. This is a huge problem and something that many people think of when you say refugees. It's changed many other countries as well. With rising tensions out of fear that they will take jobs and housing along with countries where they let them in to do just that so that their population pyramid can keep steady and they have workers.
Undocumented Immigrant: These are people who were born somewhere else other than the country they live in who do not possess an immigration document or a valid visa.
Example: Someone who entered illegally or has overstayed their visit to a country. When the government doesn't know that that person is in the country.
Refugee: A person who flees their country to go to a new one out of fear for their life. They are also protected under
international law and cannot be sent back to their prior country.
Example: When there's a war and a person becomes an intimate part of the war or if their was someone who would be killed if they went back to their home country they can go to another country and that country can't send them back
Mexico: Mexico has had many migrants trying to come to the United States. This has become and epidemic or racism within this country along with lots of tensions. The US and Mexico border has had many undocumented immigrants crossing for many years now so that they can live a better life. Our current president decided that this was unacceptable and decided to build a wall. This has caused lots of trouble and unrest in border towns where the wall was put up. Along with many migrants not being able to cross the border now having to stay in mexico.
Arab Spring: This was a series of anti-government protests in the middle east. It began as a protest to poor living conditions. A man wasn't granted permission from the government to sell his crops (the government ignored him) and when he took things into his own hands and decided to just sell them he got in trouble and wasn't able to provide for his family. This is important because with protest it caused a movement. This movement also showed that there were other places and with tensions rising some people migrated to other countries.
Documented Immigrant: These are people who were born in other countries and places other than the one that they currently live in who have legally been admitted to the country.
Example: Getting a Visa or a Green card and being able to live in the US legally when you weren't born here.
Urbanization
Per Capita: Per Capita is the term used to describe per person. For example per capita income in america is 63,690 dollars. This is import because it is used to describe data in many urban areas. Along with any area really.
Urban: Like a city or similar to a city, has something to do with a city. There can be urban culture which is a culture which is always significant and it’s a major word used to describe cities along with certain clothes and housing features
Primate City: A city that has over double the population of the second largest city. Mexico City, Mexico or Paris, France for example. These are important because they are the main areas where people will find jobs and where all of the wealth and political power is focused. These are important because they are going to be the big urban area in a certain part of the world.
Mexico has a primate city. New Mexico, Mexico Paris, France is also a primate city.
China: China is important to this branch because it has a lot of urban area. Lot's of people live in cities and they have the largest population in the world. Along with that they hold a lot of political power.
Megacity: A city with a population over 10 million. These are important to urban because they are essentially an urban area with a very high population.
Suburban: A residential area within or within commuting distance to a city. There are many people that live in suburban areas which is important. Since they are outside of a city but close enough to commute the residents play an important role in urban lifestyle.
Rural: An area that is located outside of a city or town. More countryside. The significance of this word is that it is used to describe areas with a lower population.
Rural to urban migration push factors: -Lack of job opportunities
-lack of healthcare
-lack of education
Rural to urban pull factors:
-More job opportunities
-Family ties
-Excitement mainly for young people
Brain Drain: Brain drain is when an area in the countryside or suburbs has all of the young and smart people leave to go to the city or to find a new job that's more urban and there's not many people who are smart left.
With brain drain the main services provided in large rural areas are things like farming and some other bisinusses based off of what region the rural area is in. This is what these areas tend to specialize in because there isn't many other oppurtunities iwht such a low rate at higher education.
Gentrification: Gentrification is when a government tries to improve the infrastructure of an area. They will spend money and try to make the area more “presentable”. This is important because it can help get crime rates down however it can also make it harder for lower income people to find places to live and eat.
Vancouver is an area where the government tried to gentricate. This ended with people having to leave because the prices of the clothes, food, and real estate had gotten to high for lower income residents to pay for.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is what keeps cities and towns running.
Things like stores and public transport and education. Everything can change if we have a good infrastructure or a bad one
A favela is a very low-income area in brazil that the government has ignored for many years. They have learned how to function by themselves and create an infrastructure in their small areas. These are important because some have very high rates of crime and others have learned to adapt and find new ways to use spaces for the best.
-
Carrying Capacity: The carrying capacity is the number of people that a certain area can support and in areas where the infrastructure is very good and building are safe and innovative to house more people the carrying capacity can go up.
Globalization and Trade
Trade
Exports: Goods that are transported out of our country to other countries. This is a way for us to make profit. Along with helping out smaller poorer countries who maybe harvest things like cocoa beans be able to reach more places therefore make more money.
-
Imports: Goods that are transported into our country from another one. These are important is so many ways. The majority of what we wear, smell, drink from, etc is from another country and has been imported into the US. Trade has opened many people eyes to different cultures as well as increase overall awareness of what we use in our daily lives.
Examples
China,Mexico, and Canada are the US's main trading partners. These are very beneficial partnerships because between all of the countries a lot of money and economic opportunity is available.
Ports are a huge factor when it comes to trade. Container ships pass through ports dropping off and picking up goods to bring to other countries. This is an effective way of transportation.
-
-
Capital: This is when companies get money to reach their goals. It is also something that is traded. Things like money. It is something that is human created to enhance someone's economic performance.
Creative Destruction is when a new product comes out and replaces the old one making the old ones sales go down. For example Netflix has a ton of movies and shows so the need for CD's and demand for CD's has gone down
Globalization:How people of the world interact with each other. This impacts politics and culture which is super important.
Global Supply chain: There isn't a need for every product to be manufactured in the same place anymore with new technology. As a result of this global supply chains were created. In some countries it is cheaper to make a certain part of an iphone for example. The country that specializes in maybe the camera and is able to make them for cheaper might not be able to make another part as cheap as another country. Therefore different parts are made in different countries for greater profit.
Comparative Advantage: This is what a country specializes in and what part they could play in a global supply chain. For example Mexico has bananas. Along with Côte d’Ivoire where cocoa beans are a comparative advantage and then become part of a supply chain that puts together a chocolate bar. Along with what a country specializes in a commodity might have a scarcity of something else. For example a place like Côte d’Ivoire isn't going to have a ton of oils like the middle east. Certain countries might also rely on services like legal and finance in more developed countries.
Fair Trade plays a big part in countries like Côte d’Ivoire making money even when the market price drops it cannot drop below the fair trade minimum along with this extra money is used to help build schools and clean water.
Losers from Globalization: Places that do not have fair trade get hit very hard if maybe the commodity that they are selling decreases in value. This can leave the country or organization that is selling the goods to loose money and no longer be able to have a good infrastructure along with overall quality of living going down.
Winners from Globalization: Skilled laborers have had best rewards. There have been protest saying that globalization is bad for poorer people when in reality it is not they are offered more oppurtunities . Countries that have accepted the reform are seeing their growth be high and stable and have gained control of their inflation rates.
