The empire became big in 1750. They were in control for over 300 years, then the British colonized the empire in 1902.
There was a strict hiarchy, with a royal family and middle classes, warriors, and lower classes.

Emperor which was the symbolic leader. Then Shogun who was the political leader. Then the Daimo who were basically landlords. They ruled over the Sameri which kept the peasants in place. Below them were the merchants and Artisans. This strict Hierarchy kept people in line.

There were a lot of rules limiting travel such as Japanese ships are forbidden to leave for foreign countries and if you go abroad you are to be executed and the boat impounded.
Also if you returned to Japan you would be executed. Christianity is not allowed and if westerners try to teach it they will be jailed.
