Impaired semantic knowledge impacted greatly on everyday activities eg. placed closed umbrella over head, poured orange juice on lasagna, formerly commonplace activities became foreign and scary. Lost concept of time, adjusted all clocks in house

Behavioural changes=increasing social withdrawal, apathy, disinhibition

Diagnosis of dementia made on basis of history, perf on neuropsych tests, perceptions of pts and fam, laboratory, imaging results
Ax of cog-comm function can contribute to diagnosis and provide info about: cog-comm deficitis, retained abilities, baseline cog-comm skills for Tx, counselling caregivers, predicting skills vulnerable to decline

Outcome measures
Difficulty using traditional outcome measures with pts who have deteriorating conditions- a bit tricky to assess positive changes
Reducing caregiver burden, optimising comm, swallowing, QOL w/i context of deterioration
Goal Attainment Scaling, QOL measures, AusTOMS

Consider CPT bcos they are informants of comm difficulties, they are active participants in facilitating effective comm
