- - - - Blunt Trauma: chest strikes or struck by an object; most common injury is rib fractures
        
        Rib fractures: 5-9 most commonly injured because they are not protected by the chest muscle
        
        Manifestations:
        
        Shallow breathes
        
        Atelectasis and Pneumonia may develop because of decreased movement and retained secretions
        
        Splinting effected side
        
        Pain at the site especially during inspiration and coughing
        
        Treatment: Decrease pain so the patient can breathe and adequately clear secretions (NSAIDS, opioids, thoracic nerve blocks). Emphasizing deep breathing, coughing, incentive spirometry and appropriate use of pain medications. Strapping the chest with tape or using thoracic binder is not recommended because it limits chest expansion
      - Penetrating Trauma: foreign object impales or passes through creating an open wound (ex. gunshot and knife wounds)
- - - - Apply dressings if needed
      - Positioning of patient
      - Monitor pulse, color, respiratory status,oxygen saturation
      - Send specimens to lab
      - Post Procedure Care
        
        Usually a chest XRAY (thorancentesis)
        
        May resume regular activities after laying one hour on unaffected side (thorancentesis)
        
        Monitor Vitals, O2 saturation and respiratory status (frequent)
