Chemistry Chapter Nine: The Atmosphere
Evolution Of The Atmosphere
1) The earths surface was covered in active volcanoes which released a lot of gases
2) The early atmosphere began to form and was mostly carbom dioxide with no oxygen
3) Water Vapour, released from volcanoes, condensed to form oceans
4) Carbon dioxide gas began to dissolve into the oceans and formed sediments on the sea bed
5) Green plants and algae evolved and began to use the carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
6)Photosynthetic organisms released oxygen which began to build up in the atmosphere
7) Animals and other complex life evoloved
The greenhouse effect
1) The sun releases energy
2)Most of the solar energy that reaches the earth the earth passes straight through th e atmosphere .This is a short wave length
3)Solar energy warms the earths surface
4) The energy that reavhes the Earths surface is from the ultraviolet, visble and near infrared parts of the spectrum
5) The warm Earth emits infrared radiation with a lonmger wavelength
6) Some infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhbouse gases and warms the atmosphere,
7) Adding greenhouse gases could reduce the amount of radiation that escapes
Effects of global climate change
Ice caps melting
Droughts
Rising sea levels causing Flooding
Carbon Footprint
The Carbon Footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full lifecycle of the product, service or event
Carbon Off-Setting
Companies purchase carbon credits to balance their greenhouse gases
Limitations to Change
Disagreements between science specialists
Lack of alternative Technologies
Lack of public knowledge
Economic Considerations
Lifestyle Changes
