Selfish gene
Richard Dawkins
New atheism
a group of thinkers and writers who advocate the view that superstition, religion and irrationalism should not simply be tolerated but should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever their influence arises in government, education, and politics
Selfish gene describes a new way of explaining evolution
Blind replication of success - like the virus
Over millions of generations leads eventually to cells that compete and combine
Think that's right - implications?
Molecules of water, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia + energy = amino acids
Means that the whole of evolution was powered by selfishness - driven by the blind drive to replicate and compete
progression from single cell
To jellyfish
To lobster
To reptile
To mammal
to vertebrate
To monkey
To human
I think that's right
and we're not that different - more sophisticated
Clothes, husband/wife
What we eat, who we befriend, where we live, what schools our children go to
programmed to be selfish?
Pretty much every choice we make is selfish
How do we fathom God's role in all this? Speculate on God's motives (dangerous, but)
If God wants us to choose to worship him, love him - only two choices
Programme us
Free will - completely independent - selfish
the whole of creation is driven by the compulsion to survive - unfettered by guilt
until ... mankind (ability to reflect)
All of a sudden we know we're naked Gen 3;7)
We're ashamed of ourselves
We recognise that we're full of sin
and now, 3.5 billion years later Genetically we're not all that different from a lobster or a tree, or a dog
and we can see how they compete
Nature is red in tooth and claw
top dog is deposed
