Japan's idea was to liberate countries under Western rule; however, Japan used the same idea of racial superiority of the west to colonise asian countries.
Japan was seen as a competitor not an ally; when you don’t ally with them and try to take the rising force down, it will be perceived by Japan to be aggressive action against them.
Early aggression (1894-1905)

Kwantung army (Japanese military) planted the bomb on a railway in Manchuria → blamed on Chinese and used it an excuse to invade Manchuria
Jap took control of three Manchurian provinces by March 1932. Manchuria renamed state of Manchuko
