MASTITIS
DEFINITION
A painful infection of the breast tissue
Common in lactating women
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
blocked milk duct
red/reddish patches on your breast
hard sore lump in your breast
Feel achy and run down
Have a low grade fever (less than 38.4° C [101° F])
Tenderness under your arms
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Physical examination
CAUSES
Obstruction of milk duct
Bacterial infection
NURSING CARE PLAN
Pain
Sit patient in a comfortable position
Give pain medication
Apply cool compressor to the breast
Evaluation
Check if pain subsides 4houly
Risk of infection
Give antibiotics as prescribed
If the is abscess tell mother not to breastfeed
Clean the breast with warm water
Encourage hygiene of the patient
Clean breast pump before using it
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Occurs with or without an infection
If it's not due to an infection it caused by milk stasis
The build up of milk within breast tissue
Leading to inflammation of breast
Provides an environment where bacteria can grow
If it's due to an infection is caused by...
A break in the nipple or skin
Bacteria enters this break or tear
And infects the breast and inflammation occurs
HEALTH EDUCATION
Encourage mother to continue breastfeeding
Avoid prolonged overfilling of your breast with milk before breast-feeding
Apply cool compresses or ice packs to your breast after breast-feeding
Wear a supportive bra
Rest as much as possible
