Ch 9: Tradition & Community
Quotes
“...this is why the Spirit guides the church as a body and not just a collection of assorted individuals” (p.94)
“The self-giving presence of Christ in the Church is the law of theology, the reality which governs theological reason” (p.99) -John Webster, Holiness
A good Theologian should...
Make sure our faith does not confuse cultural contingencies with normative continuities
Our final authority is not a particular tradition but rather God himself—the Lord who has made himself known in holy Scripture
Community
Each of us are laden with cultural baggage we cannot set down by ignoring
Those who isolate themselves from the church loses the truth of the Christian faith
Community of faith that is actively compassionate to those in need
We can benefit from listening to our present communities of faith
Theology grows best in community
Problem to consider:
Common mistake to see Jesus as a reflection of ourselves rather than understanding him within first-century Judaism
Theological Practice
Limit of the practice:
Tradition cannot stand above Scripture nor the experience of the church
Purpose of theology = support the proclamation of the Word and the life of the church
We must retain Scripture’s voice to speak against both tradition and experience
The practice of the church shapes theology, just as the theology shapes practice
Personal Rating
2 = I have tried to implement this in my life more, but definitely need more repetition in my life.
Cultural Prejudices
Becoming aware of prejudices can be done by:
Spending time in the presence of saints who lived in different times than our own
Effective self-criticism
We all have them whether we acknowledge them
