RS 4 Glomerular Membrane - Coggle Diagram

- - - - The afferent and efferent arterioles lie close together at a point that is
        referred to as the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle.
- - - - the inner layer covering the
        glomerular capillaries
    - - the outer layer
    - - Bowman’s space or urinary space
        
        the space between the visceral and parietal layer of the capsule
        
        is continuous with the lumen of the
        renal tubule.
- - - - Capillary endothelium.
        
        It is fenestrated
        (i.e. it contains pores with diameter 70–90 nm)
        
        and is freely permeable to water,
        
        small solutes and
        
        even to small proteins.
      - Basement membrane.
        
        It consists of a matrix of glycoproteins and
        mucopolysaccharides.
        
        Compared with typical membranes, the
        glomerular basement membrane is very thick.
        It comprises 3 layers:
        
        Lamina rara externa or outer cement layer,
        
        Lamina densa
        
        Lamina rara interna.
        
        No pores have been demonstrated in the basement membrane;
        however, its permeability corresponds to pore size (of about 8 nm).
      - Bowman’s visceral epithelium
        
        or the inner layer of Bowman’s capsule,
        which forms the third layer of glomerular membrane,
        
        is formed by special cells called
        podocytes.
        
        Podocytes have finger-like processes
        that encircle the outer surface of capillaries.
        
        The processes of
        podocytes interdigitate to cover the basement membrane and are
        separated by gaps called the filtration slits
        (~25 nm diameter).
        Each filtration slit is covered by a layer of fine filaments that constitute the diaphragm.
