RS 2 nephron - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Renal corpuscle or Malpighian corpuscle
        is a rounded structure
        comprising glomerulus
        surrounded by glomerular capsule.
    - - Renal tubule is a long complicated tubule,
        about 15 mm long and
        55 μm in diameter,
        which is divided into:
        
        Proximal tubule.
        
        The proximal tubule initially forms several coils,
        proximal convoluted tubule (PCT),
        
        followed by a straight segment,
        proximal straight tubule (PST)
        or pars recta that
        descends towards the medulla.
        
        Intermediate tubule or loop of Henle
        
        consists of:
        
        Descending thin segment (DTS),
        
        Ascending thin segment (ATS)
        
        Thick ascending limb (TAL).
        
        In juxtamedullary nephrons:
        
        the DTS joins ATS to form the hair pin band (loop).
        
        The ATS reaches up to the junction of outer and inner medulla.
        
        In cortical nephrons,
        
        there is no ATS
        
        the DTS is continuous at the bend
        of loop with the thick ascending limb (TAL)
        
        Near the end of thick
        ascending limb (TAL), the nephron passes between its afferent and
        efferent arteriole. This short segment of the thick ascending limb is
        called the macula densa.
        
        Cortical nephrons have a short loop of Henle, which penetrates only the outer renal medulla. Juxtamedullary nephrons have a long loop of Henle extending deep into the renal medulla
        Cortical nephrons occur in all vertebrates, while the juxtamedullary nephrons occur only in birds and mammals
        
        Distal convoluted tubule (DCT)
        
        is about 5 mm long
        
        It begins a short distance beyond the macula densa and extends to a point in the cortex
        
        where the connecting tubules (CNT) of two or more nephrons join to form the
        cortical collecting ducts.
        
        Collecting duct
        
        is about 20 mm long
        
        which passes through the renal
        cortex and medulla.
        
        The collecting duct, strictly speaking, is not a part of the nephron, since embryologically it is derived from the ureteric buds.
