Teaching for Understanding
What are you teaching?
Topics should be relevant to student's lives and things they are interested in
Getting students to understand the purpose of why we are teaching it
Give real-life examples to make those connections with student's lives
Think about if the topics are engaging to your students, and if it is engaging to you
Are the topics you are teaching accessible to all students in your classroom? Can you modify the way you give the information?
Generative Topics
How will the students know what they are supposed to learn?
Understanding goals should be "explicit to students"
Try putting them into a question format, so they can explore the goal that way
Setting a large goal, and then mini goals throughout to keep kids engaged, and motivated throughout
Understanding Goals
How are students learning this?
There should be a variety of activities for students to complete to expand on their learning
It should go beyond worksheets
*As a student I hated doing a worksheet, I would rather have the freedom to create what I wanted
Essays
Projects
Performances of Understanding
How will students know how they are doing?
Assessing at the end won't allow students to learn and grow during the unit
Provide feedback for students throughout
Allow students to reflect during instruction
Tell them what they are going to be assessed over before/during/after the unit
*I think this can also be set using good understanding goals
Ongoing Assessment
What does it mean to "understand" something?
"Being able to do a variety of thought-demanding things with a topic, finding evidence and examples, generalizing, applying, analogizing, and representing the topic in a new way."
*I always know for me, I fully understand something when I can explain (or teach it) to someone else
All student's ways of showing you they understand it can be different
This is why it's important to give some creativity to assesments
Also very important to give clear criteria that needs to be met, and feedback
Modern World Education
We need to teach our students how to find, sort, evaluate, and apply information to new situations
Technology is more available now, we should be integrating that into our teaching
When someone truly understands something
they can explain it using their own words
they can interpret the information that comes with it
they can apply it to contexts they already know or are new to them
they can offer other perspective and see other's perspectives
Also goes along with this, they can show empathy to other's perspectives
they have self-knowledge of it and working on seeing the bigger picture
Application for Our Teaching
Bring these ideas into our own teaching
Take the curriculum that we already have and incorporate them with these ideas
FEEDBACK throughout!!!
Never got this in our education, and we think it would have drastically changed our experience
In a way choose the ones that actually sound interesting to the students
Assessments can be so broad, and there are multiple ways to do this
Being cognizant that each student learns a different way, so they should be able to show what they learn to us in different ways too
Offer variety in the end-of-unit activities
How can students learn for understanding?
As teachers we need to give student's the opportunity to understanding performances
