The Many Faces of Mars
Spirit Rover
Landed @ Gusev crater
-
-
Even with small clues/hints at the prescence of water (" volcanic rocks had been ground into
small grains and then cemented together by salt")
The large prevalence of pyroxene and olivine implies that the crater has been DRY for billions of years

What Mars Lacks
-
-
Carbonates
-
Hence, any oceans must have been too cold/too short-lived/too hostile for carbonate formation
Conclusions
Therefore, Mars' geological makeup MUST be more multi-faceted than we initially thought
Initial Missions
Mapped the topography, imaged surface, initial observations of mineralogy

Climate change on mars
Due to the varying tilt of mars, there may be a cycle of "Ice ages" on mars where there are large amounts of snow on its polar caps
ALREADY, it is as if the Spirit & Opportunity rovers were looking at 2 different planets
Perhaps the Spirit rover's discovery was more indicative of Mars' surface than the Opportunity rover's? (most of the land is covered in Pyroxene and Olivine)
Although the planet is mostly dry, there were isolated pockets of water (as seen by Opportunity) that underwent periods of " inundation, evaporation (and possibly freezing), and desiccation"
