Concept Mapping: Digital Family Literacy Components and Practices
Print Awareness:
the children's first instance with starting to write is when they are learning their name (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 169).
For dual language learners, print awareness is important because this might be the first time the children are seeing books and things in English.
"
Something Special For Dad
,
" this is a book for the children to listen and click through, and while they do so, they can see the text light up when Daniel reads what is on the page (PBS Kids, n.d. e).
Tracing
is a great way for family members to work on print awareness with the children (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 170).
Vocabulary
helps the children be able to comprehend words when it comes to reading (Schickedanz & Collins, 2013, p.11).
Explaining what Words Mean
is a great way for the families to help foster the children's learning because they will have a better understanding of what the definitions of words are (Schickedanz & Collins, 2013, p.16).
When it comes to dual language learners explaining what different words mean is important because the word you are trying to teach them could have a different meaning in their language and it is also important because it helps them to understand what you are trying to teach them (Schickedanz & Collins, 2013, p.16).
"
Martha Seeks
" teaches the children new words while they search for dog bones, it says the word and then explains what the new word means or describes it (some of the words are colors that are going to be new to the children) (PBS Kids, n.d. b).
Oral Language
helps children when it comes to pronouncing different words (Schickedanz & Collins, 2013, p.10).
For the children who are dual language learners, Oral language is very important because this is how you will know if they are able to pronounce the words correctly in English.
"
Socks in Space

Singing Songs and Rhyming

Alphabet Knowledge
is where the children know the letters and the sounds that go with them (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 6).
Letter Flash Cards
are a great way for family members to work on alphabet knowledge with the children because they can see the letter and then make the sound that goes with it (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 6).
For dual language learners, alphabet knowledge is important because when learning English, they have to learn the English Alphabet, as well as the sounds that go along with the letters.
"
Princess Presto's spectacular spelling play
,
" is a game that the children get to create words from hearing the sound of the letter said and then selecting the letter it matches (PBS Kids, n.d. d).
Phonological Awareness
is where the children understand spoken words and the syllables in them (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 6).
Reading Books with Sound

"
Letter Dance Party
" is a game that teaches the children the sound of the letters (PBS Kids, n.d., a)
For dual language learners, sound is important because they will learn English from hearing us say the words just like babies (Beaty & Pratt, 2015, p. 43).
