how does it shape national identity?

Race n ethnicity
definitions:
race: physical characteristics that are biological in nature
ethnicity: one's ancestry,
cultural practices
, language, customs, food n dressing that are associated with an ethnic group
how does it shape our identity?:
belonging to a particular racial n/ethnic community > practices and beliefs shape our way of life
how does it contribute to diversity?:
Having a multi-ethnic population in sg
contributes to cultural n linguistic(language) diversity in sg
adapting to n integrating of other cultures-evidence of deep acceptance n embracing of other cultures
Religion
how does it shape identity?
organised collection of attitudes, beliefs, practices and worship
shared core beliefs and practices, regardless of their nationality and ethnicity
shape our interactions, choices and thinking
how does it contribute to diversity?
customs and culture affected by different practices, even if it is not of ur religion
contributes to socio-cultural diversity
eg one of sg church serves mainly christians but its architecture shows evidence of heavy chinese influence
SES(social-economic status)
definition: how income affects one's social status
affect choices made eg entertainment > influence social circle
eg golf vs bball

social mobility
ability to move across SES categories, usually within a
single generation

what can a country do to increase social mobility?

why do sg need foreign workers?
3D jobs that singaporeans shun from
demeaning/degrading
dangerous
dirty
absolute lack of manpower (low fertility) > have to get immigrants to replace
fast changing economic needs
changes are much faster than before
faster than what schs can keep up with (15 years of education before entering workforce > irrelevant skilss)
using immigrant-skilled labour as temp solution to plug the labour gap
enlarge the pie
immigrants come with skills/ expertise which singaporeans dont have/lack
industries can retain more locals >investors will only come if there are skilled workers
resentment against foreigers:
high conc of employment pass holders + company not recruiting = singaporeans dont get promotion > feel unfair and hence dont buy the govt saying of enlarging pie
what are the reasons for immigration?

pull: law and order by british, job opportunities, low crime rates, education and healthcare
