Kuhn's Normal Science & Paradigms
Paradigms: Good or bad?
Leave lots of room for people to pick up the pieces
Needs very technical equipment to provide data to prove correct
Success is at the beginning of identifying the problem, but often cannot deliver a solution
Example: The Principia
Deserting a paradigm means to abandon the research techniques it holds
Rules are derived from paradigms, but paradigms can guide research without rules
Normal Science: Good or bad?
Doesn't try to create new phenomena or theories
Lots of fact gathering, empirical work must be completed
Can follow through with the promise of extending knowledge
Must be proven over and over to be "sound"
Add to scope of paradigm and can be more precise
Normal Science and Puzzles
Both have a specific category or problem to solve
Pieces must fit together and have a purpose
Problems like cancer or world peace are not in this realm.
Both should have an interesting outcome
If it's not frustrating, it might not be worth it!
Sometimes new puzzles are created without solving the old one
