Points of Societal Collapse (Jared Diamond)
Relations with Hostile societies
Being too dependent on other societies can set us up for a collapse.
It's important to be self-reliant and able to sustain yourself if you have to
It’s good to have support from other societies, but its also important to support yourself
Relations with friendly societies
Conflicts with other societies can both physically and economically cause a collapse
If war breaks out, that would hurt a society both economically and physically
Disagreements can also influence boycotts with business which can hurt a society economically
Being surrounded by hostile people in a hostile environment won't allow a society to grow and flourish. The toxic environment will only hurt them and possibly lead them into a collapse.
Problem is beyond the present capacity to solve
Differences among environments; some environments face much more difficult issues than others
Economic factors: there may be a solution that is available or one that can be created but the country/government does not have the economic means to use it
some societies have weak judgement, which lead to them to their demise
Failure to anticipate a problem and failure in decision making
New Guinea Example:
consumed more than they could produce
cut down all the trees without being able to plant them back or grow them back
didnt anticipate their collapse because fo the rapid economic incline
Some societies don't pay attention to patterns/dont document mistakes
Some societies focus too much on short-term goals rather than long-term, which leads them into an unknown future
some societies dont preare for their future, but rather live in the "now"
Landscape Amnesia and Creeping Normalcy
The thought of never moving forward in society due to lack of resources and materials and only knowing information based on what you have.
Continuing to make the same mistakes over and over again and not solving issues without even realizing.
