Literary Elements
Direct Characterization - a method of indicating what a character is like by directly stating their personality traits.
Examples: 1. The fictional character Adam Zeik is honest, loyal, funny, and knowledgeable. 2. The fictional character Gary Bumore is insane, illogical, and temperamental.

Theme - the central idea, topic, or the point of a story, essay, or narrative.
Examples of theme: 1. A small boy doesn't listen to his mother and eats too much candy. He then is sick for the next few hours and can't go to the party. The theme of this story is listen to your mother. 2. After seeing his wallet fall out onto the ground without his knowledge, the good samaritan returned his wallet to him and was rewarded with $50. The theme of this story is honesty.

Indirect Characterization - the process in which a character is revealed through the characters speech, actions, and appearance in a story.
Examples: 1. "Billy picked up the woman's purse from the floor then handed it back to her." This shows that Billy is kind and honest. 2. "Jerimiah broke the vase and swept it underneath the carpet." This shows that Jerimiah is dishonest and clumsy.

Plot - the plot of a story or narrative is the sequence of events where each affects the next one through the principle of cause and effect.
Some examples of plots in a story are rags to riches and tragedy. The rags to riches and the tragedy plots are set into motion by one after the other of events.

Tone - the general character or attitude of a place, piece of literature, or situation.
Examples: some examples of tone include, ironic, serious, and sad.

Personification - the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman.
Examples: 1. The wind howled through the leaves. 2. The saw blade screamed as it cut through the lumber.

Genre - a category of artistic composition, as in literature, characterized by similarities in for, style, or subject matter.
Examples: 1. The Da Vinci Code is a book in the historical fiction/novel genre. 2. Walden is a book in the memoir category of genres.
