Mind Map of Chapter Three
Important Events of Chapter 3
2nd Event: 8-10 million cattle, hogs, and sheep are turned into food each year at the place Jurgis works. Jokubus takes the family into Durham's buildings. They begin at the hog slaughterhouse where the screams of the hogs are so intense female vistors cry.
1st Event: Jurgis is hired at Brown's Meat packing plant as a shoveler. Jurgis is supposed to shovel blood and guts from the slaughtered cattle. Jokubus leaves the deli in his wife's hands and shows the newcomers around the yards.
4th Event: A government inspector "inspects" each carcass before it has to go into the freezing room: feeling it's glands for Tuberculosis. The inspector is described as easily distracted and any carcass could go into the freezer without having him check it.
3rd Event: The author describes slaughter very detailed since the process of slaughtering is very mechanical, and crucial. The characters start to feel sympathy towards these animals because they kill these animals and watch them cry and take their last breaths.
6th Event: Describes how every hour: 4 to 5 hundred cattle are turned into beef. It explains how they kill the animals, blood goes everywhere before people can clean it, how the animals are skinned and decapitated for more cleaning.
5th event: Jokubus points out all of the signs that demanded cleanliness sarcastically, and Jurgis doesn't understand why he said it that way. Jokubus shows Jugris and the group the room where the spoiled meats go.
