Classic Forms of Government
Authoritarian Forms
Totalitarianism: Government has complete control over your lives and everything about it
Authoritarianism: Government has control over the economy
Theocracy: Government where religion and government are the same thing.
Elite Forms
Monarchy: Ruled by Kings and Queens
Aristocracy: Government in which the noble or naturally powerful people rule
Timocracy: You must own land to participate in government. Some forms of Timocracy is similar to being ruled by the wealthy
Plutocracy : Government in which the wealthy own all the power.
Self Governing Forms
Democracy: A government in which the majority rules above everyone else and people vote for decesions
Republic: A government in which the people select one of their own to make decisions and control them
Styles of Sovereignty
Unitary
A single government with all the power.
Confederacy
A league or alliance of confederate states
Federal
Several States are in a unity together, but are still independent.
Executive Powers: The power to carry out laws
Parlimentary
Not chosen by voters, but by the majority party in parliament
Can be removed for any reason
Presidental
Chosen by voters
Independent from legislative branch
Can be impeached by the house, but very hard to remove.
