a crime which (unlike a summary offence) is serious enough to be tried on indictment
may attract punishment from imprisonment of more than 1 year up to life
may attract death-penalty, where legal. Called a felony in the US

can be head by a magistrate sitting alone
so doesn't have to be heard by a judge and jury
triable either way
the magistrates court hears the initial facts of the case
on hearing the facts, the the magistrates court must decide if it should be tried on indictment rather than summarily
