Pre-Planning for Group Counseling - High School Anxiety and Coping…

- - - - Establish group rules
      - Explain confidentiality and the idea that in a group setting it is expected that participants will respect it, but it is not guaranteed (Tyson et al., 2004).
      - Briefly discuss what anxiety is and how it affects our bodies.
        Discuss different examples of things that might cause anxiety in high school students. Conduct an ice breaker activity to help the students get to know one another and become more comfortable--Group Anxiety Box (modified from the gratitude box) --students write down something that causes them stress or anxiety and puts it in a box. Each one is then read out loud and member can contribute thoughts and ideas about the stressor. Writer stays anonymous, unless they choose not to (Foss et al., 2008).
      - Introduce the school counselor (Tyson et al., 2004).
      - State purpose of the group and also acknowledge individual goals of the group (Tyson et al, 2004).
    - - Group members will decide how to apply the skills and information they have learned throughout the group sessions (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Set uo a post group follow up meeting 4 to 6 weeks out to encourage students to continue work on their goals and to allow time to share success stories (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Review confidentiality and reinforce that it continues even after the group ends (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Allow ample time for students to say good bye. Although they will still see each other, the dynamic that was created in the group is ending and this might be difficult for some students (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Closing Activity -- Remembering exercise--students recall critical points in the sessions and share gains they have made since the beginning of the group (
    - - Reiterate the importance of confidentiality and rules (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Introduce new information and relate it to past weeks (Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educators, 2015).
      - Group Activities that support the information for the week.
        
        Sample activities
        
        Week 5--Anxiety coping statements--students sit in a comfortable position and repeat positive coping statements either out loud or to themselves. Examples include "I'm stronger than I give myself credit for and I will survive this" and "Anxiety is normal and it tells me to use my coping strategies." (Lee, 2020).
        
        Week 3--Group Journey Meditation--member sits quietly and imagine a relaxing and comforting scene. Then they describe the scene in detail to other members (Group Activities, n.d.).
        
        Week 4--What Can I Control -- members trace their hand and write things they can control inside their hand (my behavior, my words) and write things they cannot control outside of their hand (other's behavior) (k., n.d).
        
        Week 2--3 Breathing Techniques--Measured Breath, Bumblebee Breath, and Belly Breathing for Relaxation ("3 anxiety breathing techniques you can practice anywhere" — Anxiety Slayer™," 2010).
        
        Week 6 -- Mindful Walking Exercise -- Group takes a short walk and focuses on things they sense instead of their thoughts (Barnes, 2018)
        
        Week 7– Yoga Activity—practice different yoga poses to promote relaxation (Barnes, 2018)
