Signed in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi is an agreement between the British Crown and Māori. Around this time, there were 125,000 Māori and about 2000 settlers in New Zealand.

Everyday life
The daily life of the community was based around getting food, so most people spent their days in activities such as: planting and tending crops in communal gardens. fishing or gathering seafood. hunting moa, other birds or seals.
Sports
The top sport played by Māori men is touch rugby – which is played by a very significant 35% of Māori men who play sport, as compared to 14% of all New Zealand men who play sport. Like other New Zealand males, 28% of Māori males play golf.
