Pathophysiology

fear reactions activate the prefrontal cortex and amygdala --> release stress hormones which suppress the hypothalamus
impairment of hypothalamic - pituitary axis --> the fight or flight response occurs --> cortisol levels become suppressed and hormones (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) are elevated

Early intervention in susceptible pt.'s prior to a traumatic event can decrease susceptibility of PTSD
