TO WHAT EXTENT HAS CAPITALISM INCREASED THE RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASES?
unfair marketing that criticises healthy things
for years, marketing has advertised coconut to be extremely unhealthy but recent studies have proven its ultimate benefits
companies have criticised full fat milk whilst advertising their low-fat or "no fat" milk even though low-fat milk has been proven to have too much protein for the body to digest
soy has been stated for years to have unhealthy hormones that affect the body, when in reality the allegations have been proven false
work has become more stressful
the cost of living has increased
they have to work for more hours at a time
less time to be active and exercise
stress has been proven to be a factor of diabetes and heart problems
fast food is much cheaper than produce
subsidies are provided for fast food companies
produce have higher prices in comparison making them less attractive
costs are kept less which means fast food can be provided for cheap
encourages unhealthy eating habits for people
e.g. business-centered people are more likely to buy fast food than cook or go to a restaurant
poorer people have to invest in fast food
more likely to die because of the lack of nutritional value or health care in some countries
fast food is marketed for young kids as well (happy meals)
causes young kids to be addicted to fast food from a young age and causes a detest to healthy eating
fast food has the optimum amount of sugar to addict people
people find it harder to quit fast food and are instead drawn to eat more and more of it
people are tricked into believing that the savoury food that they are eaten has no sugar when it actually has a lot of fat and sugar
normal healthy food seems to become boring and bland which causes people to be drawn to the "tastier" fast food
capitalism provides a profit margin
the government benefits from keeping people sick enough
organisations such as the national coronary organisation recommends foods that are heavy in red meat even though red meat is proven to be detrimental for people suffering with heart complications
government will earn more money from taxes by multinational companies such as KFC
there has been an increase in marketing strategies that promote unhealthy foods to the general public
marketing has the power to influence people's brains which causes an increase in unhealthy eating within the society
before marketing didn't exist as powerful as in today's society due to social media which means more people are prone to eat what is being advertised
increase in cgf and technology advances means that advertising is more tempting for people
foods have many chemicals and hormones put in it which causes the food to become unhealthy and have horrible health effects on people
increase in production of goods and services
more pollution which can increase the risk of diseases
stress due to various factors such as childhood trauma or increased work-load
stress can cause people to over-indulge in food which can cause obesity and diseases to arise - 600lb life
there is a stigma behind getting help for problems or going to therapy in general which causes people to suppress to problems which can psychologically affect them and therefore physically
people have become poorer
there is more disease spread in the poorer regions of the community because there is no basic health care or housing system most of the time
TO WHAT EXTENT HAS CAPITALISM INCREASED WORLDWIDE OBESITY LEVELS?
obesity is much more common now than before
around 1/4 of adults in England are obese now
increase in worldwide money levels means that people are spending more and eating more than necessary
tactical marketing that has contributed to obesity levels for both adults and children
"happy meals"
fast food being marketed as being quick and easy for busy people
the cost of living has increased
people have to work more and more members of a family have to work to be able to afford living comfortably
people have less time in their every day life
their is no time to cook a proper meal - creates an adherence to fast food in daily life which can cause obesity over the years
there is less time to spend with children or cook proper food for them which means fast food can be utilised for young kids as well
the level of stress of people increases
can cause over-indulgence of food as a method to cope with stress - "the only thing they can control is food"
trauma has become more common in this century
trauma is considered to be a stigma so a small percentage of people ever get help to cope with it
instead, some people choose to deal with their trauma by over-indulging on food because it gives them comfort
