The words are used in the past form, for example "The dancing Pan fell on its side and broke in two, and nothing was said" on page 21.
Another example is "When Julie came into my room and told me that Mother was not getting up..." on page 43.

Point of view
The book is written from the first person. You can read everything he thinks and does. You don't know what the other characters think.
The book is written from Jack's point of view. You don't hear his name a lot in the book, only in conversations.
The book is written in the I form, for example "I knew it was morning, and I knew it was a bad dream." on page 33.
Symbols in the book
A Metaphor is: "The house seemed to have fallen asleep". Jack said this, he meant how empty the house feels after the death of his mom and dad.
An example of a simile is: "It annoyed him to see Tom walking straight up the side of the rockery using the path like a short flight of stairs." Jack was talking about how his father used to get annoyed at his brother. Jack uses a simile to describe how his brother used the path.
