PSYCHOLOGY MIND MAP
Issues and debates
Free will vs determinism
Determinism
-
-
-
-
-
Many causes, cannot measure them all
Soft determinism
Behaviour is seen as determined to an extend ( with influence of other factors ),
in the absence of compulsion, people have a degree of choice and freedom
-
-
people do have a choice, but that choice is constrained by external or internal factors
Ie: being poor doesn’t make you steal, but you will feel the urge or be desperate to do so
Free will
-
-
→ However, it doesn’t show that their behaviour is random,

Interactionism & hollism
Interactionism
considers how different levels of explanation interact
Any phenomenon ( eg: mind or behaviour) has many aspects that interact to provide a complete picture
Hollism
holism is more concerned with understanding the whole experience, rather than individual explanations
-
-
-
-
Internal validity
-
Internal validity is high when confounding variables have been controlled and we are quite certain that it was the change in IV that caused changed in DV
Links directly to bias: less bias, the higher the internal validity of the experiment
Qualitative data
-
Observations
Observation allows the researcher to become immersed deeply into the studied phenomenon, sometimes even becoming a part of it.
-
Meaningful knowledge cannot be generated without observation, for example: because it cannot be articulated
Interviews
-
-
Attitudes, values, patterns subjective phenomena are unobservable
