looking for naturalistic explanations for cause of natural phenomena; diminishing divine participation of natural phenomena
James Hutton (1726 - 97)
"Theory of the Earth"
He disputed catastrophic events as an explanation of the earth's landforms. As the founder of uniformitarianism, he argued earth's process acts as a series of circles, therefore the present observation could be used to interpret the history.
