Game console timeline
Gen 2
More than 900 home consoles were made. Most of theses consoles were dedicated meaning they only played 1 game which had its advantage of doing one job well rather than 8 ok
-
Gen 3
23 consoles were made this generation alot less then gen 1 however this time 3 were canceled alot of these had cartrages and different changeable controlers for games such as the nes zapper
-
Gen 4
17 consoles were released and 4 were canceled. This was the first generation if 16 bit consoles and the first 32 bit console the sega 32x
-
Gen 5
This is when 32 bit hit mainstream with all but 2 consoles being 64 bit and 1 being 8 bit which was a japan only console and this is also when 3d games started to appear and was when playstation apperaed being the most popular console
-
Gen 6
This generation is known as the 128 bit era as the main competitors had 128 bit chips in them. This was the first time that xbox competed and was the second most sold console at 24 million far behind ps 2 at 155 million which was partly due to the fact it was the cheapest bluray player at the time
-
Gen 7
The only big improvment this generation is oricessir soeeds being mesured in ghz rather than mhz granted this wasnt that important as the wii won with a 729 mhz processor however this was due to motion controls something the xbox and playstation tried to recreate but failed to do so
-
Gen 8
only 4 consoles were released as the market has its 4 main competitors with little room for improvement due to the moding comunity. Data is hard to find as numbers are allways changing as this generation is still on going and could contine or be replaced with gen 9
-
Gen 9
We don't know much about this gen even if it excists as the xbox series x and playstation 5 both with similar processors both from amd. the only noticable improvment is 4k which the old gen does and raytracing which isnt big enough to make a new gen however somepeople say that due to playstation having a new number and xbox having newer specs that its a new generation its all up to preference
Gen 1
This was the generation that defind consoles and what they need to do for generations to come so there were a lot of strange consoles that look abstract from todays standards with controlers with dials and sliders and purpose build for one game. Alot of consoles cloned one another to get on the market such as the odyssey and the odyessee
