W/c parents are harsher and inconsistently apply discipline which prevent kids from learning self-control leading to problems with teachers.
USE OF INCOME (BERNSTEIN & YOUNG)-m/c parents use income on educational toys to develop child’s intellect
PARENTS EDUCATION (DOUGLAS)-w/c lack interest in education &aren’t ambitious for kids. This is shown by infrequent visits to school/ contact with teachers. Results in low aspirations and motivation
WORKING CLASS SUBCULTURE

W/c less interested in kids education because of w/c subculture which gives different values to the mainstream ones

COMPENSATORY EDUCATION
A gov. Policy to stop cultural deprivation by providing extra resources to schools & communities in deprived areas. It aims to compensate w/c for their cultural deprivation
EG. OPERATION HEAD START(1960s)- USA provided enrichment for disadvantaged pre-sch. Kids and it aimed to improve parenting skills. In the UK in 1960s EDUCATION PRIORITY AREAS were a part of Head Start
More recently, Education Action Zones & Sure Start etc introduced to work with parents to promote physical, intellectual and social development of kids
=LACK OF SKILLS,VALUES,ATTITUDES NEEDED FOR EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Kids learn this from parents through PRIMARY SOCIALISATION
