False reporting of the Boston Bombing
Ethical Issues raised by the article
Are the sources used lying to give media what they want?
Why should sources be racing to be the first to report something?
Are we as the viewers becoming so needy for information, that news outlets would rather give us possibly false information than something that is true?
Are sources trustworthy or just giving information that they have heard from other sources and embellished or falsified?
Should news sources be willing to say we don't know?
Play devils advocate, what opposing view could be expressed
The opposing view could be that the media was presenting what they were given. They can't spend time verifying everything they are told because they want to pass the information on to the viewers that want to know what is happening right now.
What is your opinion about the issue, and what caused you to form that opinion
My opinion on this is that media outlets should be telling us the truth and slowing down when it comes to reporting. Everyone wants to be the first to break a story, but this means that false information is spread around.
I came to this opinion with the recent news climate and how twitter and other outlets have become a stream of false information and true information when it comes to things. Especially certain news organizations that have posted proven false content to their viewers instead of factual content.
How could using a balance in research and reporting tactics have made a difference in the outcome of what was reported
If more research had been done, this issue may not have happened at all. I think that more of an accurate reporting of the events after the bombing would've been told, and people would have been informed in the same amount of time. Instead of having the false reports which could have possibly delayed things to an extent even derailed certain efforts by the FBI or Police.
Your reaction to the ethical issues raised by the information in the article
I think that some sources can still be trusted, but I think that there are many stories and facts that media outlets need to have multiple sources on, and make sure that they are all trustworthy.
I think media outlets should focus on being honest and have as factual news as possible. Instead of trying to be the first, try to be the most accurate.
Following the first answer, I think a lot of sources should be looked at and scrutinized so that they are as reliable as possible.
In this day and age its too easy to get things now. I think that we should slow down on major events and try to take in all of the facts and angles to know what has happened. I think this will help in false reporting. At least if people in power and news organizations want to tell us the truth.
I think news organizations should be very willing to say "we don't know at this time." Instead of having to back track on a previous statement, it looks better on them to say we don't know. Or even "we have had a report of (this) but are working on verifying it and aren't sure yet." would even be better than sticking behind a false report.
