Jared Diamond’s Question: Why do societies make disastrous decisions?
The idea of not knowing any better or not knowing at all how to balance resources and sustain a society
A lack of precedent for failing societies. Not having something to look of of such as other societies in the area or records of societies that fixed the problems the Greenland society had.
Lack of education to help them understand what is wrong from right when sustaining and balancing a society. They simply could've just not known because nobody gave them specific instructions or help so they had little knowledge of the affects from their actions
Lack of problem solving skills. When their were major problems they denied they existed or that they were using up all their resources. As individual society members they were selfish in creating problems and then not fixing them cause they didn't understand how
An absence of relations with other societies on the land
They had no help from other communities around them because they didn't make those relations. If they did have some external help they could've possibly kept together their society for a while longer.
Missing outside education from societies that were doing better. They didn't have that source they could ask questions to if they were failing or an ally to help hem realize if they were.
Absence of trade with other societies or tribes. This could've helped expand the society's resources as well as introduce them to culturally different items or ways of handling resources, that would have helped them if put into their way of living.
Loss of communication when things were going wrong
Didn't want to admit that they were in the wrong. Their selfish behavior for business and use of resources caused them to have the mindset that what they were doing was good for them and bad for everyone else but it didn't matter as long as it benefitted them.
The idea of phycological denial, that if there was a possible outcome that would demolish their society, the created a blind spot for it and didn't admit that it was happening or could affect them in a bad way.
There was no communication if there was a problem happening, they ignored the fact that they were using up their resources and that what was happening was a problem
Decision making off short term benefits
Ignored the fact that even though what they were doing at the moment was good for themselves, it might not be good for the society in a couple years.
Didn't plan ahead for problem solving, didn't make plans if all went wrong or out of hand.
They didn't look at the bigger picture of what the goals of their society were and how they were going to plan out intake. Overall poor decision making
Leaders and elites were not held accountable
There was a problem from leader to citizen that made it difficult for citizens to be controlled and easier for leaders to make bad decisions along with citizens
No control over citizens and their actions. No consequences for actions because at the time they also didn't see that were they were doing was wrong in the first place.
Leaders weren't held to a higher standard when nit came to problems. Overall they were doing bad at controlling or helping to lead their society instead they weren't controlling it when it needed it most.
