The Challenges of Organic Food
Food Supply Chain
Some shop refuse to retail organic products because it has a higher cost
geographical constraints
most organic farms are located in the New Territories as there are more flat lands for lower costs
farmers may focus on the market on the New Territories more due to lower transport cost hence higher profits, especially growing organic crops require higher production cost
it might be more difficult for residents not living in new Territories to obtain organic food
few farms grow organic food because of high cost and high efforts needed, as no agrochemicals can be used during the growing process,
lowering farmers' incentives to grow organic food
lack of labors
increase overall production cost
Severe land pollution from suburbanisation i.e. new town development
lowering productivity of organic food
Government Support
General Support
The government does not provide enough support(eg. advertising) for the growth of organic and local farms in HK.
such as educating farmers on the technological-know-how on the use of organic farming technology, especially most farmers are elderly with low education level
Policies
The government didn't provide enough education on people.
So that people do not realise the importance of organic food.
Land Usage
a lot of flatland in New Territories became heavily polluted brownfield sites
the government shows little motivation in carrying out land resumption to retain these land for organic farming
farmlands are resumed for new town development
Over focus on economic development and neglect the environment protection.
Lack of policies to support the development of organic food
Financial support, such as low interest loan
Organic farming methods like hydroponics and drip irrigation requires large amount of capital, yet the farmers lack financial support from government
Individual
hectic lifestyle
no time for groceries shopping
continue to stick with food that is easy to prepare and buy, such as fast food
no time for cooking
no time for learning new recipes
increase financial burden
no matter imported or local organic food, they are more costly than non-organic food
low awareness on the matter
low motivation and lack of willpower
difficult to keep up with such eating habit
People usually do not realise the benefits of eating organic food, eg protecting their health and the environment :
difficult to change deep rooted habits
continue to stick with junk food and non-organic food as it's difficult for them to change their eating habits
Society
Organic food(esp in HK) has not been a trend so that it becomes harder to get popularity
People will then think that consuming organic food is not down-to-earth
prevalence of fast food culture from globalisation
people do not know if the food in shops are organic
less motivation to find organic food
