Tissues & the Primary Growth of Stems
(Ch. 5)
Types of Cells and Tissues
Parenchyma
cells have only primary walls that remain thin
Parenchyma tissue- mass of parenchyma cells
Colenchyma
Primary walls thick in some areas and thin in others
Sclerenchyma
Has both primary wall and thick secondary wall that's almost always lignified
Internal organization of stems
Vascular tissues-

Xylem- Tracheids, vessel elements
Cortex- interior to the epidermis
Phloem- sieve cells, sieve tube members
Epidermis- outermost surface
Vascular bundles- interior of the cortex, xylem and phloem together
Stem Growth
Apical meristems
Subapical meristem- right below the apical meristem
Eudicot
Monocot
Xylem & Phloem are vascular tissues
Vascular tissues together form vascular bundles
