Brain Organization & Learning
Hemispheric Specialization
The ability of certain areas of the brain to perform unique functions
Left/Right Hemispheric Processing
Left Brain
: Speech, literal, analysis, sequence, time, words, letters, numbers, external stimuli, spoken language, arithmetic
Right Brain
: Patterns, spatial, context of language, recognizes faces, places, objects, processes internal messages, negative emotions, geometry
Breaking Brain Myths
Specialization is NOT exclusivity
Left/Right hemispheres complement one another to form harmony.
No evidene people are 100% left or right brained
Sex does not solely determine how an individuals brain is organized
Females DO NOT perform lower than males in math and science. It is a result of stereotype threat.
How we Learn to Speak & Read
Wernicke's/Broca's areas correlation to making sense and producing words
Spoken language influences pace we learn to read.
Only repeated sounds get recognized by a babies brain. Baby learns to ignore foreign sounds by listening to mother. CHildren need live human interaction to learn. TV's don't do it.
Provide an environment rich in communication activities for younger students. See an issue? Fix it while the brain can still be rewired.
Neural systems involved in reading: angular gyrus, auditory-processing system, visual processing
Phonological/Phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle/phonics, vocabulary, fluency, text comprehension
Implications for Classroom Learning
1. Male & Female brains are different. Females better at communicating between hemisphere, males within a hemisphere.
.
No significant difference. Boys use more of right brain, girls use more of left. Hormone influence? Environment?
Education system is set up for young girls to succeed. Young boys appear as rebellious when really they aren't having their needs met. Need to differentiate instruction!
Be flexible when teaching reading rather than rigid. Provide developmentally appropriate and relevant content that students enjoy.
Lower students anxiety by having a positive attitude, providing engaging content and unique instructional strategies
