Playing Devil's Advocate
One could think that everyone was in a panic and news sources were trying to help police by getting information to the public as quickly as possible.

They could have been in just as much of a panic as the rest of the Boston, and the nation were; trying to so what they could in any way possible.
My opinion
If they report falsely and have to go back on it, especially in a situation where a terrorist is at large, it would cause more panic than simply reporting the facts.
It needs to be understood by news reporters and anchors that in a time of crisis, they have just as much of a role in keeping the peace as police, EMT, and firefighters do.
While I can understand that humans make mistakes, and that it was a scary time in our country's history, that does not dismiss some of the most inaccurate reporting I think I have ever seen. I was lucky enough that when I watched the reporting of this, I did not watch Fox News or CNN, so I did not receive any of this false reporting.
We are taught as kids to think before we speak, this is a simple rule that should also be followed by the press.
