Unit 6.1
Websites
Advantages
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
It is much easier to update a website (and there is no need to do a reprint and then distribute the new version).
Disadvantages
-
-
-
It isn't as portable as a paper-based system (although with modern smartphones and phablets this is fast becoming untrue).
Possible for customers to go to undesirable websites (either by accident or as a result of the pharming attack) - this can lead to distrust from customers.
-
Because it is a global system, it is more difficult to target the correct audience using website advertising.
Multimedia Presentation
Advantages
Use of sound and animation/video effects which are more lickely to grab the attention of the audience and can make the presetation easier to understand
-
-
Disadvantages
-
-
There is a danger when using multimedia since the focus may be on the medium rather than the message or the facts in it
It is veyr easy to make a bad presentation with too many animations effects and too much text and images
-
Music Scores
-
This is a way of finding out which is the most popular song. It is done by tracking how many people downloaded the song and is done on a weekly basis
Email
Advantages
-
• Emails can be sent 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
• Webmail means emails can be sent and received from any computer, anywhere in the world, that has an internet connection.
• Cheap - when using broadband, each email sent is effectively free.
-
-
-
Disadvantages
-
• Viruses are easily spread via email attachments (most email providers scan emails for viruses on your behalf).
• Phishing - sending an email to a user falsely claiming to be a legitimate company to scam the user into providing information, such as personal information and bank account numbers on a bogus website. The details will then be used for identity theft.
-
• Spam - unsolicited email, i.e. junk mail.
Video conferencing
Advantages
-
• You can have a 'meeting' with people from many different offices /countries without any of them having to travel
• You can see people as well as hear them. This means you can see their body language which you can't do with a telephone call.
• Video conferencing is an excellent way of keeping in touch with friends and family, even if they are in a different country.
Disadvantages
• A very reliable, fast data link is needed. Many companies hire a connection specifically to allow video conferences to take place
• Even with a fast connection, there might be a slight delay between responses. Especially from one side of the planet to the other
• If the hardware breaks down for any of the participants, they cannot 'attend' the meeting
• People could be in different time zones around the world. This might mean that some people have to stay up through the night in order to attend the meeting
Facsimile transmission
Advantages
• Faxing has reliability advantages over postal messages as well because mailings risk damage or loss. Faxes sent to the right number are guaranteed to appear on your recipient's fax machine immediately.
• With email there is always a risk that accounts can be hacked and documents intercepted. If your office is secure, there is less risk with a fax.
• Faxes transmit instantly. Emails move quickly as well, but they can also take more time if you send a large file that takes more than a few seconds to upload or download.
Disadvantages
• Fax machines tied to landlines are limited in the sense that they can receive only one message at a time. So if a sender repeatedly receives a busy signal at your office, he will have to stand by and wait for the line to become free.
-
• You can’t use a fax machine unless you have an actual landline phone. This is less common these days, as everyone uses cell phones
-
Phones calls
Advantages
-
• The conversation is relatively private between you and the caller - although others might be able to hear what you are saying
• Calls can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
-
-
Disadvantages
-
• You cannot see each other's body language, so a lot of the nonverbal communication is lost
• It is not easy to make a record of what is said during the call. Things might be forgotten or mis-interpreted.
• With standard telephones, only spoken information can be exchanged - you can't send files. Smartphones however do have this facility.
