Food Security& Insecurity
Food Security & insecurity
we produce enough food to feed everyone in the world but still, some people don't get food and undernourished. this is because food is a commodity so it goes where the money is
poverty stops foods from going evenly to all people in a country
if people in a house have enough money to buy well-nourished food and are not hungry or fear getting hungry then the house is food secure
and as more people move from villages and towns to cities this is becoming an urban problem
It mostly means making sure everyone gets good, healthy, safe, and the culturally right food to eat every day in a countr
nutrition
kids who eat more of this food before reaching the age of 2 have lower IQ and less developed brains. obesity and malnutrition is rising
this fulfills the cravings but is undernourishing over long periods. in many poor communities, it is cheaper and easier to find junk food than healthy food
fast food and junk food are easy to get hold but don't have all the nutrients, they mostly have fats, sugar, salts which make us feel full and make the food tasty.
there is a big difference between hunger and malnutrition. hunger is a physical discomfort while malnutition is that we are not getting enough nutrients
gender
pregnancy and early child care can disrupt women's education and work opportunities. women-headed households have less money than male-headed households
around the world most poor people are females. this is because they end up in lower-paying jobs than men. even if females and males are on the same job level females get paid less. they are more likely to look after home expenses and kids.
so female-headed households are more food insecure. females headed and the couple headed households both have the same amount of income rate because females tend to allocate more funds for food and buy more nutritious food
poverty
so families share and borrow food during those days while some might have to be resort to other means like eating from dumps, begging, or prostitution.
. it is closer and there is a family credit system so if someone doesn't have the money then it would be added to the credit system. all people require a source of income for buying food, this can be a job or social grants or small business.
some people might use this one to feed the sick, other needy people and there are school feeding schemes which provide some families with their only meal.
if poor people need food then they need the money to buy it and they need to be close to a supermarket. supermarkets are cheaper when the items are bought in bulk quantities but informal traders work as a good support system for poor people even though the food is more expensive,
but a quarter of South Africa's population is unemployed and the grants are only enough to buy food and families have a lot of other expenses. so the people run out of money for food at different times of the months.
