Three Norns, females named Urd (Fate), Verdandi (Being), and Skuld (Necessity).

Together, the eagle and the hawk guarded Yggdrasil. Their eternal duty was to protect the tree from the giant serpent which lay at its roots.

All of this time goats and deer nibbled on the tender branches of Yggdrasil, while birds and insects bored into its bark.
