Playing devil's advocate, here are
some opposing view points that
could be expressed.
Rushing to report that the bombers had been captured
could have been a way of easing the minds of the people
who were worried that this might happen again.
There is truth to the “at the end of the day, somebody is
going to be right,” quote from the article
By taking a chance on jumping the gun it is possible that
whoever did guess right will become the official source of
this report.
How using balance in research and reporting
tactics could have made a difference in the
outcome of what was reported
If these news organizations were required to provide credible sources alongside the stories they are breaking, it would have eliminated the spread of misinformation about the Boston bombing.
The only credible sources in this case would have been the Boston Police Department or the FBI, and the fact that none of these organizations would release their sources tell me that they were assuming the final outcome instead of using fair and balanced research tactics.
