Unit Two: Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: An example is that the location of ancient Mesopotamia is within the borders of modern-day Iraq. The ancient civilizations also goes into what is today Turkey, Syria, and southwestern Iran. (Steele 6)
Architecture:An example of architecture of ancient Mesopotamia is Ziggurats. Ziggurats is a lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia, it is a massive terraced platform made of brick. (Steele 24-25)
Writing:An example of writing of ancient Mesopotamia is Cuneiform. Cuneiform is a writing tool that is made out of clay. These clay pieces have symbols on them that are straightforward representations of everyday objects. (Steele12)
Art:An example of art of ancient Mesopotamia is the Victory Stele of Naram-Sin. This pillar is a victory monument to Naram-SIn. (Steele 20)
Government:An example of government of ancient Mesopotamia is Hammurabi. He was known for making a lot of strict laws. (Steele 30)
Religion: An example of religion of ancient Mesopotamia is polytheistic. Mesopotamians would believe in multiple Gods/Godesses. (Steele 51)
Ancient Egypt
Government:On page 12 it said the people of high office were often related to the king. When the people approached the King they often kissed the ground at his feet. (Hart 12)
Writing:On page 34 it said that the ancient Egyptians had to be experts in writing hieroglyphics. They also had a type of writing called hieratic. (Hart 34)
Location:On page 8 it said the land of the ancient Egyptians was called the "Black Land" due to the rich dark silt. The people of ancient Egypt lived along the Nile River where floods made the land fertile.(Hart 8)
Architecture: On page 20 it says that the first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in 2650 BCE by his gifted architect Imhotep. It was supposed to represent a gigantic stairway for the king to climb to join the Sun god in the sky. (Hart 20)
Art: On page 50 it says that when we look in the past of ancient Egypt we will see that they liked music and dancing. Not only did the like music, but they celebrated festivals with a lot of music and dancing. (Hart 50)
Religion:An example of religion in ancient Egypt is polytheism. Like ancient Mesopotamia Egypt was also polytheistic. They believed in multiple gods and goddesses to. (Hart 24)

Writing: On page 11 it says that Shang Kings used oracle bones to call upon their ancestors. The oracle bones answered their questions. After the questions were answered the were inscribed on the bone, which were typically ox bones or tortoiseshells. (Cotterell 11)

Ancient India
Writing: The author wrote that there have been over 400 characters discovered in multiple locations. Scholars have wondered whether these symbols are part of a proper writing system. Since we cannot decipher the text we can't gain insight to many details of the Indus society. (Prentice Hall:World Studies)
Government: In the text it said, that Aryan used the Caste system. the Caste system has many royal levels with the untouchables at the bottom and the Brahmin at the top. The people are born into this social group and cannot change. (Prentice Hall:World Studies)
Location: In the text it said that in the 1920s, archeologists discovered the remains of ancient cities in the region. The region around the Indus River had rich fertile soil, which was good for farming. The Indus River is located in South Asia specifically in modern-day Pakistan. (Prentice Hall:World Studies)
Art:In the text it says that the Indus people made their cities very well. It says that waste water was directed to cover the drains. This was very advanced for their time. (Prentice Hall:World Studies)
Religion: An example of religion in South Asia is Hinduism and Brahmanism. Both religions are very much in common and share many rituals. Brahmanism was polytheistic and heavily influenced Hinduism.(Prentice Hall:World Studies)
