Chapter 3. Cell Structure
Membranes- all cells contain at least 1 membrane
Membrane Composition
#
Monolayer
Bilayer
Intrinsic proteins- immersed in the lipid bilayer
Extrinsic proteins- outside the bilayer
Fluid Mosaic Membrane- heterogeneous liquid in the membrane
Properties of membranes
Vesicles- pieces of membrane that're small bubbles
Vesicle Lumen- volume inside vesicle
Endocytosis- cell absorption
Exocytosis- cell excretion
Permeability
#
Selectively Permeable Membrane- certain substances cross the membrane more rapidly than others
Freely Permeable membrane- allows everything to pass through quickly.
Impermeable Membrane- allows nothing through at all.
Cell Types
Prokaryotic- simpler, only found in domains Bacteria & Archaea.
Eukaryotic- more complex. found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
Plant Cells
#
Mitochondria
Matrix
Outer& Inner Mitochondrial membrane
Cristae
Plastids
Cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Central Vacuole
Tonoplast- vacuole membrane
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Smooth ER
Rough ER
Nucleus- archive, personal storage
Dictyosomes
Plasma Membrane
Microbodies
Protoplasm
Microtubules
Cytosol
Microfilaments
Cell Wall
Permeability & Endo/Exocytosis
Plant Cells are Eukaryotic
