STEPS OF PERFORMING HAJJ
- IHRAM AT MIQAT
Ihram means entering to the state of Hajj. The place where one enters into Ihram is called Miqat. When a pilgrim reaches Miqat, he is required to wear a special untailored cloth called Ihram. Also, one must necessarily intend to perform Hajj.
-
- TAWAF
Tawaf means circling the Ka’abah. Pilgrims circle the Ka'abah seven times counterclockwise. Pilgrims recite the Talbiyah while doing so.
- SA'EE
The run between the two low hills called As Safa and Al Marwah is known as Sa’ee.
This is done in the memory of Hajar running in distress of water for her son Ismail [AS]. One runs 7 times between these hills.
Labbayka llāhumma labbayk(a), labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk(a), inna l-ḥamda wa n-ni’mata, laka wa l-mulk(a), lā sharīka lak.
At Your service, Allah, at Your service. At Your service, You have no partner, at Your service. Truly all praise, favour and sovereignty is Yours. You have no partner.

- The stay at Mina on the 8th of Zul- Hijjah
Here Muslims rest, pray, recite the Quran and
prepare for the next day.
- Wuquf
Wuquf is the halt in Arafaat on the 9th of Zul- Hijjah. In Arafaat we commemorate the Success of Muslims over the pagans of Makkah. It was the success of truth over falsehood.
- The stay at Muzdalifah
The pilgrims spend the night of the 10th of Zul Hijjah here.
Arafaat is also the symbol of unity and solidarity because it is a pillar of Hajj that should be done by all the pilgrims in the same place and at the same time following the same way.
The day of Arafaat reminds us also of the Day of Judgement when we will all stand up waiting for the Just Judgement of Allah Almighty.
- Rami Al Jimar
This is the act of symbolically stoning the devil (Shaitan) in Mina on the 10th through the 13th of Zul Hijjah. This commemorates the tradition that Prophet Ibrahim was tempted three times by the devil, and rejected all three of his overtures by stoning him, and driving him away.
-
The three locations are symbolized by three stone pillars in Mina.
The 1st one is called Jamrat Oola, the 2nd one is called Jamrat Wusta and the 3rd one is called Jamrat Kubra, also Jamrat Uqabah.
- Shaving one’s head or hair clipping
- Tawaf Al Ifadah: the final Tawaf
After this, Muslims generally pay a visit to the grave of Prophet Muhammad (SW).
