What is Wilderness?
1: My Perspective on Wilderness
Natural/Wild environment
Home of the wild animals (animal/plant dominated?)
The real earth (Forests/Deserts/Mountains, etc.)
Land that is not urbanized and affected by human industrialization
Not suitable/appropriate for human residence/activity
Falls behind on technical advancements/civilization
3: The Article's Description on Wilderness
To Western Culture: 'Wilderness is a place of pristine natural beauty unpolluted by human life: an Eden sanctuary, an antidote to urban living'
‘In wilderness is the preservation of the world'
Contains no sign of human life
'Conservation is undoubtedly vital when the biological diversity of the planet is so threatened.'
‘This variant of land theft is rapidly emerging as one of the biggest problems confronting indigenous peoples today,’
2: The Video's Description on Wilderness
Land dominated by animals and not humans
Wilderness to Animals:
home to 1/3 of European species
requires vast space for the animals
shapes the landscape overtime
A high population of predators (more than 8000 bears!)
Wilderness is rare and hard to find nowadays, it needs high levels of protection, in which humans are starting to do work on
Human Impacts on Wilderness: - has been illegally logged for decades by humans - vast areas are ripped of vegetation - breaks ecosystems and habitats
prevents areas from self-regenerating - puts animals in danger (reducing them), leading to bigger world problems like climate change.
Are nature and wilderness the same thing?
George: Wilderness is something that isn't affected by humans, the area cant be affected by something that's not in their ecosystem/category
Nature: specific group or species that are somewhat wild (in the city but not completely in the wild)
Isabelle: Wilderness is a form of nature because there are some parts of nature that are controlled but not completely wild (e.g hiking, animals, etc)
Final Group answer: Wilderness is a form of nature. They are essentially the same thing, just in different forms, as they have their own specialties that differ them from each other.
