Unit 2 Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location
An example is that the location of ancient Mesopotamia is within the borders of modern day Iraq. The ancient civilizations also goes in to what is today Turkey,Syria, and southwestern Iran.(Steele 6)
Writing
An example is that they used soft clay and pressed wooden sticks on the clay. Another example would be they used picture symbols to represent objects such as cattle, grain, or fish.

Architecture
An example is Ziggurats looked similar to the stepped pyramids of ancient Egypt. Another example is the ziggurats themselves had small temples or shrines on top.

Art
In the text it said Mesopotamians were great lovers of poetry,art, and music and public are was on a grand scale. Statues glorified rulers and famous battles and music was played on state occasions.

The author wrote Hammurabi came to the throne of babylon in 1792 BCE. He founded the first Babylonian empire and is remembered for his extensive legal code.

In the text it says the sumerians worshipped many gods and goddesses they believed that the stars were traveling across the night skies were the cows of Sin or Nanna. Mesopotamians were polytheistic.

Ancient Egypt
Location
On page 8 it said the land of the ancient Egyptians was called the "Black Land" due to the rich dark silt. The people of ancient Egypt lived along the Nile River where floods made the land fertile. (Hart,8)
Writing
On page 34 it states in the text that Scribes had ro be experts in writing hieroglyphs which is what there writing was called. Another example is they could be written from left to right,right to left, or top to bottom.

Architecture
On page 28 it states the pharaoh was supposed to perform duties of the high priest in every temple Egypt. Another example is in the great temples such as Krunak, located in thebes.

On page 10 it states in the text that the king was not the most powerful and important man in Egypt- he was thought to be a god. Another example is the Queen of Egypt could also be seen as a goddess but was usually given the title of ¨Great Royal Wife¨.

On page 48 it states the fertile mud deposited by the annual Nile flood that allowed farmers to barley and emmer wheat, the mainstay of the egyptian diet. Another example is egyptian bakers made cakes of many sizes, sweetened by dates or honey gathered by concial pottery beehives.

Writing
On page 11 it says that the oracle bones were used to talk with ancestral spirits.The oracle bones would answer their important questions. After the questions were answered they were inscribed on the bone, which were typically ox bones or tortoiseshell.

Religion
In the text it says that they followed Brahmanism. They were also a polytheistic religion. This religion heavily shaped the way of hinduism as we know it today. {Prentice Hall: World Studies}
Architecture/Technology
The author wrote that the advanced architecture and construction techniques of the Indus cities is also shown with impressive dockyards, granaries, warehouses, brick platforms, and protective walls. These early cities show remnants of the worlds earliest sanitation system. Famous indus valley cities include Mohenjo-Daro(located above). (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Location
In the text it said that in the 1920s, archeologists discovered the remains of ancient cities in the region. The region around the Indus River had rich, fertile soil, which was good for farming. The Indus River is located in South Asia specifically within modern-day Pakistan.

In the text it says that their form of government was a Caste system. They lived in Ganas each Gana had several families and ruled by a warrior chief. In the caste system you are born in a class and must stay there until death. {Prentice Hall: World Studies}
Writing
In the text it said one of the most confusing aspects of this ancient civilization that is the writing cannot be deciphered. Many of these symbols are located on seals, ceramic pots, and other types of materials. Some of the scholars have wondered whether these symbols are actually constituted a proper writing position
