Unit Two: Ancient Civilization
Mesopotamia
Location: An example is that the location of ancient Mesopotamia is within the borders of modern-day Iraq. The ancient civilizations also goes into what is today Turkey, Syria, and southwestern Iran. (Steele 06)
Writing: On page 12, it states "Early people who lived as hunters and nomads did not need written records." It also states "As the first cities rose, people began to require records of ownership, business deals, and government." (Steele 12)
Architecture: In the text, it said 'A lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurat, a massive terraced platform made of brick.' The author also wrote 'The word ziqquratu is Assyrian and means "Height" or "pinnacle".' (Steele 24-25)
Art: The text said, "Public are was on a grand scale." The text also says, "The ancient Mesopotamians were great lovers of poetry, art, and music." (Steele 26)
Government: In the text, it said "The Sumerians own name for their territory may have meant 'land of the civilized lords.'" The author said "Sumerian kings claimed to rule by the will of the Gods and therefore had to perform certain religious duties." (Steele 10)
Religion: The mesopotamians were polytheistic. I know this because on page 14, it states, " The Sumerians believed in many gods and goddesses." It also states "Later Mesopotamian peoples took up or adapted Sumerian gods, sometimes giving them new names." (Steele 14)
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8, it said "The land of the ancient Egyptians was called the 'Black Land' due to the rich dark silt." "The people of ancient Egypt lived along the Nile River where floods made the land fertile." (Hart 08)
Writing: On page 34 it states, Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphics, an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs. Hieroglyphics were used on state monuments, temples, tombs, and religious papyri. (Hart 34)
Architecture: In the text it said, The first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in c. 2650 BCE. It rose in six stages and is called the Step Pyramid. (Hart 20)
Government: On page 28, it states that pharaohs were supposed to preform sacred rituals, but the chief priest usually took that role. It also states, The temple preist would decide the wealth of the temple, and were very powerful until the king took some of their power. (Hart 28)
Religion: The text said, "The Egyptians worshipped hundreds of different gods and goddesses, and sometimes it difficult to work out who was who." It also said, "Each of the 42 different administrative districts had its own god, and there were many others besides." (Hart 24)
Art: In the text it said, Egyptians enjoyed life to the full. Party scenes on tomb walls, songs on papyri, and musical instuments showed us how much music and revely meant to them. (Hart 50)

Ancient India
Religion: The author wrote that the Aryans had a sacred text, called the Vedas. They lived in the religion of Brahmanism, which later influenced the development of Hinduism. Though these two religions share many things, the Aryans were polytheistic. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Location: In the text it said in the 1920s, archeologists discovered the remains of ancient cities in the region. The region around the Indus River had rich, fertile soil of which was good for farming. The Indus River sits in most of Pakistan, and a small portion of Afghanistan.

Writing: The author stated that the Aryans had a form of writing that still cannot be deciphered to this day. It is most commonly found on clay pots and seals. Some scholars have wondered whether these symbols are constituted as a proper writing system or if they are just gibberish. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Architecture/Technology: The text states that very well planned cities were found, thought to be built by the Aryans. The early cities here were cared for deeply, and people would make sure their homes were well maintained. The Aryans even developed an early form of the toilet, as holes with water serving as toilets. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Government: In the text it said that ARyans lived in a government system called the "Caste System". The caste system is a social group were someone is born into a level, that defines how you will live. When one dies, depending on how much karma they have received, they will either be reincarnated into a higher class if they had large karma. (Prentice Hall: World STudies)
