Unit Two: Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: I know because the land known as ancient Mesopotamia was located where modern Iraq is at today. A great river, the Tigris, rise in the Taurus Mountains to join the Euphrates River. (Steele 6)
Religion: Some of the early people in Mesopotamia shared similar views about the gods and about life after death. In the royal grave there were goods from Ur including gold silver cups, gaming boards, and musical instruments. (Steele 20-21)
Writing: On page 12, it said The early people who lived as hunters and nomads did not need a written records. The Mesopotamians people marked their property with small cylinder seals, which were generally made of stone but sometimes made of metal, wood, or ivory. (Steele 12)
Government: In 2334 BCE Sharrum-Kin or Sargon was founded a powerful new Akkadian dynasty. The legend of Sargon, the baby in the rush basket, crops up about 1000 years later in the Biblical Book of Exodus. (Steele 22)
Architecture (Buildings): In the text a lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurat, a massive terraced platforms that was made of brick. The ziggurats were made out of Sun-dried mud bricks that were faced with fired bricks. (Steele 24)
Art: The ancient Mesopotamians were great lovers of poetry, art, and music. The royal game board of Ur is one of the oldest games in the world, and one of the most beautiful. (Steele 26- 27)
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8 it said, the desert covered more than 90 percent of egypt or also called the "Red Land". Some of the Ancient egyptians lived on a strip of land on either side of the Nile, where most of the nile would flood and made the land fertile. (Hart 8)
Art: In the text it said, even as children the ancient egyptians enjoyed their lives.The egyptians made dolls out of wood, clay beads for the hair attached to lengths of twine. (Hart 52)
Government: In the text it states that at the great state of occasions like the royal jubilee celebrations or the giving of gifts to the favored countries, the king and court gathered together and top the officials, diplomats, and high priests would attend often. Counties often used wooden throw sticks to catch birds. (Hart 12)
Religion: On page 24, it said that the egyptians worshiped hundreds of different gods and goddesses, and sometimes it was difficult to work out who was who. Jackals were known to haunt cemeteries and they were linked with funerals--the idea being that a jackal god could protect the domain of the dead. (Hart 24)
Writing: In the text it says that the egyptians used scribes near the top of the Egyptian society and capable scribes could do very well-one, Horemheb, even became king. Scribes are usually shown seated in egyptian art. (Hart 32)
Architecture (Buildings): The first great Pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in c.2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep (pp.34-35). Today there is a law in Egypt forbidding visitors from climbing the great pyramid. (Hart 20)

Writing: In the text it says, the oracle bone was made from an ox bone or tortoiseshell. the bone or shell was scorched in order to uncover answers to questions. The Shang people used the oracle bone to communicate with their ancestors.

Ancient India
Religion: In the text it says, that the religion was known as Brahmanism or polytheistic that heavily influenced the later development of Hinduism. They speak a language called Sanskrit. They use a sacred writing called Vedas. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Location: In the text it said, the Indus valley region was very good for agriculture because it had fertile soil. Around 5000 years ago, an alluvial plain developed into a civilization. The Indus Valley River region covers most of modern-day Pakistan, the northwestern portion of India, and a bit of Afghanistan. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Writing: In the text it says, the most confusing aspect form this ancient civilization is that this writing cannot be deciphered. Over 400 of these symbols have been found in different locations. They are found on seals, ceramic pots and other types of materials. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Government: An example of their government is that the aryan influence on modern-day india was the making of the caste system. The Caste system began because Aryan had 4 social classes, which they called varnas. The people in these cities were divided based on they're wealth and occupation. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Architecture/ Technology: In the text it said, the people within the Indus Valley have well created planned for their cities.They advanced in granieries, dockyards, warehouses, brick platforms, and protective walls. They're cities were well thought out and planned; that had straight streets and big buildings. ( Prentice Hall: World Studies)
