Unit Two: Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: I know because the land known as Ancient Mesopotamia was located where modern Iraq is at today. A great river, the Tigris, rises in the Taurus Mountains to join the Euphrates River. (Steele 6)
Religion: In the text it said that a god or goddess was worshipped within each city. The Sumerians believed that the stars moving across the sky were the cows of Sin.(Steele 14)
Writing: The author wrote at first, they only only used picture symbols that represented objects such as cattle and grain. Over time, the pictures changed into a script that represented sound and meaning. (Steele 12)
Government: I know about this because in Sumer, the City-State rulers were honored with titles like lord, king, and governor. There was also many rulers that enjoyed having great and proven power over people. (Steele 10)
Architecture: An example is ziggurats, which were massive, terraced platforms made of brick. Most ziggurats had between 2 and 7 levels, and were typically built on top of previous structures. (Steele 24)
Art: One example is music was played in many places in Mesopotamia. There would be music playing on state occasions, in temples, and even just regularly in the town or the village. (Steele 26)
Ancient Egypt
Location: In the text it said that over 90 percent of Egypt was covered in desert, which they named the "Red Land". However, the egyptians lived on the banks of the Nile river. (Hart 8)
Writing: In the text it said that hieroglyphs were a complicated system of picture writing with over 700 different symbols. The text also said that in 1799 the Rosetta Stone was found which depicted the language of Greek, demotic, and hieroglyphic. (Hart 34 & 35)
Architecture: In the text it said that the first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in 2650 BCE. The pyramids were first known as the "Step Pyramids" because it represented a gigantuous stairway that the king could climb to join the Sun god in the sky. (Hart 20)
Art: I know there was art because displayed on walls and papyri, there was party scenes, songs, and musical instruments to show us that they were being entertained. There was also music performed on an everyday occasion, as well as on farms. (Hart 50)
Government: I know this because the king was known as the most powerful man in egypt, he was even thought of as a god. The queen of egypt could also be seen as a goddess, but was often given the name of "Great Royal Wife". (Hart 10)
Religion: The author wrote that the egyptians worshipped hundreds of different gods and goddesses. He also said that many of the gods were portrayed by animals. (Hart 24)

Writing: On page 11 it says that the oracle bones were used to talk with ancestral spirits. The oracle bone would answer their important questions. After the questions were answered they were inscribed on the bone, which were typically ox bones or tortoiseshells. (Cotterell 11)

Ancient India
Religion: In the text it said that the religion of the once fabled Aryans is known as Brahamanism. It is a polytheistic religion that heavily influenced the creation of Buddhism. Finally, most of the information we know about them today comes from their sacred texts, known as the Vedas. (Prenctice Hall: World Studies)
Location: In the text it said that in the 1920s, archaeologists discovered the remains of ancient cities in the region. The region around the Indus River had rich, fertile soil, which was good for farming. The Indus River is located in South Asia, specifically with modern day Pakistan. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Writing: In the text it said that their symbols are located on seals, ceramic pots, and other materials. Also, because of their confusing words and texts, it is difficult to gain insight into the details of their society. Finally, over 400 symbols have been discovered from their civilization. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Technology: The author wrote that the Indus people solemnly cared about their hygiene and their cities showed this. Their superior architecture included very advanced techniques like dockyards and protetive walls. Their cities were also very ahead of their times with nice streets that are straight and wide, and they also had big buildings. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Government: The author wrote that the Aryans had a massive impact on modern day Indian society. Also, one of their biggest advances in government was the creation of the cate system. A caste is a social group that takes away human's rights to move up and down in social classes. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
