The New Deal
Reform: make the US better for ordinary people- unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, etc.
-
-
-
-
Relief: relieve extreme poverty, feed the starving, stop people from losing their homes/ farms
-
-
Helping the needy
Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)- it was all about relief for the unemployed, providing food and clothing
Positive: It was given $500 million to help homeless, penniless and starving Americans
Negative: Most of the money was used to increase the number of soup kitchens instead of directly aiding the homeless, penniless and starving Americans
-
Recovery: revive the economy- industry going, people working.
-
-
Farmers
Agricultural Adjustment Agency (AAA)- paid farmers to produce less food, as a result, their incomes doubled.
-
Negative: AAA helped farmers but not tenants and sharecroppers who worked on the land- they were evicted because there was not enough work for them to do and farmers replaced them w/ machinery
