FACILITATING EFFECTIVE DISCUSSIONS
PREPARING
Plan on how to conduct the discussion
There are many ways to be present and to participate
Help students prepare for the discussion
Establish ground rules for the participation
State how much time you have for questions and what you are looking for this time
Ask them to state their name before speaking
Keep background noise minimum
Slow down when using big words or complicated phrases and urge the students to do the same
STARTING
Refer to the questions
List the key points
Use a partner activity
Use a brainstorming activity
Pose an opening question and give students time to answer
Divide students into small groups to discuss a specific question
Organize an informal debate on a controversial issue
ENCOURAGING
Create an inclusive discussion environment

-arrange the seating in the room
Allow students to ask questions or share ideas anonymously
Give them low-stakes opportunities to think and discuss on the topic
Do smaller discussion before share it with entire class
Prepare smaller activities before the discussion start

Positively reinforce student contributions
through gestures such as smiling and head nodding
Balance students' voices in the discussion

Keep the discussion focused
Repeat the key point for the comments and the questions
Take notes during the discussion
Alert if the discussion is deteriorating
Avoid making remarks if the students are having trouble communicating
Prevent the discussion from deteriorating into a heated argument
Bring closure to the discussion
Remember that not all students are comfortable with extended direct eye contact
